FANCY GAP, VA.  On Tuesday, Aug 26th, we returned to Mt Airy to pick up Betty's jewelry order.  We did some shopping on Main Street at one of the souvenir shops.  Betty wanted to get something for herself and friends, and for the lady who is watering her indoor plants while we are away.

The town has so many unabashed Christians expressing their faith, that many stores have some kind of Christian witness on display. I heard what seemed to me to be soothing hymns being sung in the background.  Turns out it was a CD of Andy Griffith and backup singers. They were singing the oldie goldies of the faith that mostly gospel hymnals only contain.  Not a theological fit for most Presbyterian hymnals, but sung from a full heart.

On Wednesday, Aug 27th, Betty was not feeling up to going out, so we spent the day reading indoors.

Today, Thursday, Aug 28th, we drove into Galax so that Betty could get a pedicure and I could get a haircut.  With Floyd's Barber Shop no longer available, I had to look elsewhere, and nothing in Mt Airy looked worth a try.  We had researched where to go on Google to see who had the best customer ratings.  Admittedly a shot in the dark.

The first barber shop I stopped at had a sign in the door window stating "Be right back."  Very casual place.  After waiting a while, we knocked on the door, then called their phone number.  No response.  So we drove to another well-rated barber in town.  Sign on door stated that the current time was well within the hours of operation, but the door was locked and no one responded.  Betty suggested we give the first shop another try, so back we went.

First Barber Shop

This time, not only was the sign down and the shop open for business, but three customers were ahead of me.  The barber was rough as you could find, but seemed able to cut hair.

After getting Betty to her appointment with the pedicurist, I returned to get my haircut.  $16 cash only.  After hearing the other customers discuss with the barber all the events of the town while getting their hair cut, I got my turn.  Not a bad cut, and I returned to the pedicurist to check on Betty's progress.  She would not be finished for another half hour or so, so I read on my phone as I waited.  Betty and I both were surprised at the morbidly obese customers, one in particular who was getting her nails done for her upcoming wedding.

Betty was disappointed with the pedicurist, who would not use her nail polish and insisted that only his gel polish would work for her.  Glad we do not live full time in this area.

Had lunch at a nice new place that allows you to custom design your bowl of salad.  Wonderful fresh and delicious ingredients.

On the way back to the campground, Betty wanted to stop for a photo of what she calls Hobbit land, based upon the Hobbit movie with its particular plant life.  What she was referring to is areas overgrown with Kudzu.  Looks intriguing to her.  Photo included below.

Overgrown Kudzu

When we returned to the campground, we were surprised to see it fully occupied with RVs.  When we left, there was only one other RV in the whole campground and had been that way for a couple days.  Now every slot was full.

FANCY GAP, VA.  On Thursday, Aug 21st, Betty and I drove up the Blue Ridge Parkway 10 miles from the campground to the Blue Ride Music Center to see what volunteer musicians were performing that day.  It is always a free performance.

That day it was Scott Freeman and Willard Gayheart, a fine duet on several instruments, including mandolin, violin, guitar, and dulcimer.  I was unable to upload a video, as I did last year, but did get a fair still shot to include here.

From there we continued on to Galax to walk on the track and do some grocery shopping.

On Saturday, Aug 23rd, the Rohrbaughs drove up from Denver for lunch with us at the Eagles' home.  It was a short but wonderful visit.  So great to see them again.

In two days it was Jo Rohrbaugh's birthday, so Betty got her a couple presents and Marti provided a cake.

Happy Birthday, Jo!

On Sunday, Aug 24th, we attended church in Mt Airy as usual.

Today, Aug 25th, we drove down to Mt Airy again to get Betty's ordered jewelry that had arrived.  The owner of the store had left Betty a message saying to pick it up today or tomorrow.  After driving down there, it turns out the store is closed on Mondays!  We had not had lunch, so we stopped in at Barney's Cafe, which has a good rating, but we had never eaten there before.  We got Barney Burgers, and Betty also got their strange French fry offering called Chili Cheese Fries.  Neither of us could eat very much of it, but the burgers were very good.

The Cafe walls were covered with Mayberry memorabilia.  Once again it makes me wonder how much longer baby boomers will be around to take an interest in things from the old Andy Griffith Show.  Click on any image to enlarge.

Map below shows how many Andy Griffith Show fans reside around the world.  Betty noticed that Salmon, ID had no pin, so she added one.

We had hoped to do some shopping for a friend in the shops along Main Street, but the power went out on that section of town.  I had even hoped to get a haircut somewhere, now that Floyd's was closed, and Betty wanted a pedicure, but shops were giving up on the power situation and closing for the day.  We headed on back to the campground.

It had been such a picture-perfect day, clear and cool, that I had to get some shots of the area in great light.

FANCY GAP, VA.  Thursday, Aug 14th, we drove down to Mt Airy again for our appointment with the local Jeep dealership.  We noticed on the day following our arrival here, driving to church in Mt Airy and back, that the display screen on the Jeep dashboard was so dim one could not read anything.  Then at night, when the doors opened, the overhead lights did not come on.  We attributed it to the experience in South Carolina when the Jeep battery went out.  The earliest appointment we could get was for the 14th.

The man at the desk at the Jeep place listened as we described the problem and wrote up a repair ticket.  The mechanical staff was out on lunch break.  When the supervisor of the mechanical staff returned, he read the description of the problem and chided the man at the desk for not realizing it was the usual glitch for that model year Jeep Cherokee.  There is a rotary switch like a cylindrical wheel that is activated by rolling your thumb up or down.  It is located down low in an inconspicuous location where you would not think to look for it (or ever use it).  Apparently, someone in Spartanburg when the battery was replaced, accidentally rubbed the switch with his knee while working in the car.  The Jeep man explained that customers are constantly wasting time coming in for this reason.  One more reason not to buy a Jeep when Ford is making Broncos again.  At least they did not charge us anything.

We then were free to get some lunch, then continue on over to Main Street for Betty to see a jeweler about two broken necklace chains.  If your are looking for a gold (not gold-plated silver) chain, you are in for a shock.  The price of gold over the last 6 years has tripled.  Yike!

After that, Betty insisted on getting a Whit's frozen custard.  This place also seems to be under new ownership from last year when we saw Bible verses on the freezer cabinets.  Not that Mt Airy has any shortage of Christian influence.  Bible verses are written on many storefronts.

From there Betty wanted to visit the Christian bookstore across the street.  Seemed to me the items there mostly were for women and children.  As we came out of the store, I managed to get a shot of one of the several 1960s vintage Ford squad cars as shown on the Andy Griffith Show.  His influence here is huge.  Even Rt 52 that runs from Mt Airy to Fancy Gap is named the Andy Griffith Parkway.  It was along this route that we made our last stop, at the local Hobby Lobby for Betty to look for an embroidery kit, but there were only a few small kits that did not appeal to Betty.  We actually were surprised by how ill-informed the staff were there.  We had to ask several people to help us find the few items they had.

Mayberry Squad Car

On Friday, Aug 15th, we returned to Galax to walk once more on their track.  We did more laps this time and hope to return several more times to work our way up.  They have a water aerobics class, but the pool area is heated up so high that just opening the door to the pool area nearly made us swoon.  The heat contributes to raising the temperature of the track area that is on the same floor.  So far, of all their offerings, only walking on the track seemed like options for us.

After that we did more grocery shopping at Walmart, got a salad at Wendy's, and returned too our home-away-from-home here at the campground.

We have seen no more of our friends, the Eagles, since they busy themselves every day working in their yard.  Looking forward to Saturday a week from now when the Rohrbaughs will be driving up here to visit with the Eagles and us.

Today is my sister's 78th birthday.  She is busy with her daughter and granddaughters earlier today, so later on we shall call her to wish her a happy birthday.

FANCY GAP, VA.  Yesterday, Aug 12th, we drove over to Galax to try walking their track at the recreation center.  Along the road to Galax, we came to a cow crossing.  Apparently these are common in some rural areas, but I have never seen one.  Betty managed to get a photo just as the last cow was crossing in front of the car ahead of us.  As we drove on, we had to be careful not to drive over the two large cow patties.

The recreation center is a large split-level four-story building with a track on the second floor.  The center of the track is open to allow viewing the basketball game below on the first floor.

A nice facility, and free to use.  After a few laps, we went shopping at Walmart.

Today, Aug 13th, we left for Mt Airy where Betty had an appointment with her hair dresser.  As we drove out of the campground area, we noticed hay being baled along the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We had no idea that any kind of farming was done along the parkway.

While Betty was having her hair done, I drove the Jeep over to Main Street to see the tourist area that we have enjoyed in the past.

I thought I might get a World Famous Pork Chop Sandwich at the Snappy Lunch, but as I have done in the past, I forgot that they close daily at 2 pm.  It was long after that, since Betty's appointment was at 4 pm.  So I stopped at the Whit's for a chocolate frozen custard cone.

Snappy Opens and Closes Early

Next door to Snappy Lunch is Floyd's Barber Shop, where I have gotten a haircut in years past, as recorded on this blog.  The last time I got my haircut there (was it last year?), the barber and owner of the shop was rather despondent because his wife had left him.  At that time I wondered what effect that might have on the future of Floyd's Barber Shop in Mt Airy.  Well, today I was saddened to see that the shop is for sale.  A landmark for years is gone.  I could see through the window that the photos that had covered most of the mirrors were gone.  Only a few on the opposite wall remained.  The shop was in disarray now that the former owner was gone.  Truly sad.

It was a hot afternoon, so I strolled the remainder of Main Street, looking for a store that was still open.  Many close at 2, 4, or 5.

Unusual Items for Sale Along the Storefronts

I found a couple stores that were still open and (hurrah!) air conditioned.  They leave their doors open even with the AC running, so it was not nearly as cool inside as I had hoped.  One souvenir shop had some interesting items.  They truly reflect the local sentiments as well as hope to appeal to tourists.

By 5:20 pm Betty called, so I drove over to pick her up.  I told her about Floyd's shop, and we both reminisced sadly about times we had visited there.

FANCY GAP, VA.  Events of late have not been very adventurous.  We attended church Sunday, Aug 3rd, in Mt Airy at the Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church (OPC) that we have attended in the past when parked in Mt Airy.  It is about a half hour drive from Fancy Gap to Mt Airy on typical country roads found in this neck of the woods.  Since several church members live far from the church, rather than an evening service they have a weekly covered dish lunch followed at 2 pm by an afternoon service.  Makes for a good time of fellowship every week.

On Monday, Aug 4th, we did some grocery shopping in a nearby town named Galax, VA.  Our familiar Publix stores cannot be found around here, though there is a nice one in Boone and several other towns in NC.  Shopping in a Walmart was not nearly as nice, but that was the best food store in Galax.  Galax is a truly small, poor, country town.  I hear there are things to do there, and the Eagles, our friends from their days in St Augustine, seem to have gotten involved in events at the local community center.

On Thursday, Aug 7th, we enjoyed a nice dinner at the Eagles' house, along with our mutual friends, the Totzkes, whom we met last year while visiting up here.  They live in the same neighborhood with the Eagles.  I tried to get a photo of our group for this blog, but could not find enough interest in being photographed.  Maybe later.

Friday, Aug 8th, the Eagles picked us up to drive down to Mt Airy for a monthly church group dinner at Lobby Hill Seafood.  Interesting place serving large portions.  We all ate too much.  Once again I failed to get a group photo.

On Saturday, Aug 9th, we mostly did laundry in the motorhome.  Takes a long time for a load to run in the smaller sized washers and dryers that fit in a motorhome, but to be preferred to going to a local coin laundry.

On Sunday, Aug 10th, we again were at church for the two services and lunch.  A nice time of fellowship.

Today, Monday Aug 11th, began with a downpour of rain with nothing but rain in sight for the next few days.  However, early afternoon the rain suddenly quit and the sun came out brightly.  Actually, the sun felt too hot for me.  I had gone out in a rain parka expecting rain, but it had quit and while carrying a garbage bag up the hill to the local dumpster, the sun came out and stayed out.  The dumpster has a bear lock on it for the local black bears, but I have not seen any, and the locals say that they are rare.

Our bird feeder with a camera has captured nothing here.  If we had been able to follow our original itinerary with stops in Newland, NC, it likely would have proved to be more promising.  At the Eagles' house, they have several feeders with beautiful birds, but around here the very large crows seem to chase them off.

Hopefully in coming days we can find more interesting adventures to report.

FANCY GAP, VA.  We arrived here safely on Saturday, Aug 2nd.  We began our trip on Wednesday, Sept 30th with our customary stop at Buc-ee's on International Golf Parkway to top off our diesel tank.  The engine was turned off as usual while we did this.  After fueling up, we went inside for some of their sandwiches for lunch.  After eating, we returned to the motorhome to continue our trip to Savannah.

But the engine would not start no matter what we tried.  Turns out our two starter batteries had died.  We had to wait until after 7 pm to get someone to come to install new batteries, a rather stressful wait.  Rather than continue our drive to Savannah at that point, we elected to return home, perform the laborious process of unhitching the Jeep and backing the motorhome back into the storage port to await departure the following day, Sept 31.

Once again we embarked on our trip, but this time there was no need to stop at Buc-ee's.  Apart from the usual annoying drive up I-95 near the Jax airport, where highway destruction of some kind continues with no end in sight, we made our way to the Savannah South KOA, where the heat was as furnace-like as it had been in St Augustine.

On Aug 1st we continued on toward our next stop in Kinards, SC.  This involved driving on the dreaded I-26 west toward Columbia and beyond.  At one point we drove bumper-to-bumper creeping along for half an hour.  When we reached near the point that was causing the slow-up, we could see from atop an overpass that what awaited us ahead were three two-lane roads creeping into a merged destination of only two lanes!  Note to self:  never drive on I-26 again.

On Aug 2nd we continued westward on I-26 to reach I-80 to I-77 all the way to Fancy Gap.  As we approached Spartanburg, SC the motorhome rear shook back and forth sharply.  I looked back at our towed Jeep to see the steering wheel jerking side to side quickly.  I pulled off to the right side of the road to check to see that all was well with the tires and tow bars.  I suspected that the problem stemmed from a bad battery in the Jeep.  This powers (along with its usual car duties) the mechanism that keeps the Jeep towing four-wheels-down in line with the motorhome as it is pulled. Using a battery jumper pack, I got as much charge into that battery as I could to enable towing until we reached a place in Spartanburg to get a new battery.  Batteries were trying to steal the show on this trip.  Once we had the new car battery in place, we were able to continue our trip to Fancy Gap along the Blueridge Parkway.  Driving the motorhome on the parkway seemed like a fish out of water.  The lanes are narrow, and we were glad no one approached us head-on as we drove to the campground.

We still need to have the Jeep electrical system looked at because on the way home from church Sunday the display screen went dark.  I found a work-around to get the display to work temporarily, but we have an appointment with the Jeep place in Mt Airy in a few days.  Other Jeep places lacked the needed software to diagnose the problem.

It is quite a view up here, and much cooler than down at lower altitude.  But starting last night, Aug 4th, it began raining, and it is forecast to rain a lot on and off for several days.
