WILLIAMSBURG/JAMESTOWN, VA.  Nov 2-4.  Spent two days exploring Colonial Williamsburg and half a day (Sunday afternoon) exploring Colonial Jamestown.  Both areas have changed a lot for the better since I visited in the 1980s.

Late the first day (Nov 2) at Williamsburg we watched and listened to the fife and drum corps play a selection from Handel's Royal Fireworks:  fife and drum corps   The light was not good for photography, so minimal effort was made here.  Other than the video above, the only photography for this day is below.  Betty insisted that I take her photo in the stocks outside the courthouse, opposite where the fife and drum corps was performing.

The next day (Nov 3) was a clear day, so we shot as many photos as we could, including a walk down to William and Mary College.

George Whythe, Thomas Jefferson's mentor in law and signer of the Declaration of Independence, had a substantial house in keeping with his prominence.  It was hard to get a good angle to photograph this house, since it is close to the street and the other side of the street is lined with tall trees.  I thus stood far too close to get the shot in good proportion, and I did not have a tilt-shift lens to accommodate so close a position.

When I visited Williamsburg in the early 1990's, the Wren building still dominated the campus.  Other buildings were not of the same style and were showing their age.  Apparently recent money came in to fund more buildings in the original style of Wren.  Very pretty campus.

Nov 4 was Sunday.  In the morning we attended Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Williamsburg.  Following that, we headed just down the road from the church to Jamestown.  It was another sunny day, so photography was easy except for the crowds.

There is a very large visitors center at Jamestown now, with theaters, gift shop, museums, etc.  Very impressive, very unlike what I saw in the early 1990's.  There are three ship replicas in the harbor, one each for the Susan Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed.  The Susan Constant is the much larger of the ships.
