Arrived safely at Meteor Crater RV Park on Meteor Crater Road (so named because the giant crater is just down the road).  We are just west of Winslow, Arizona.  Winslow was made famous by The Eagles in their song "Take It Easy."  There was a line that ran "... I'm standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona..."

The last leg of today's trip was on I-40, which was built over a stretch of the old Route 66, but we got no kicks on Route 66.  We were traveling up Rt 77 to pass through Holbrook to connect with I-40 west, but there was a railroad accident that cut off traffic one mile before we could get to I-40.  The police said there was no other way to I-40 except driving south and west for about three hours to get to I-40.  We would have been driving in the dark dodging elk and deer.  But Betty, being the clever soul that she is, found on the map that if we hurried east on Rt 180 17 miles, we could enter the Petrified Forest National Park and drive north through it quickly to reach I-40.  We got through it, slow driving that it is, in about half an hour, and exited through the north gate just as it closed at 7 pm (we thought).  Turns out that Arizona never went on daylight savings time, so it is an hour earlier here than Mountain Time in all the states around them.  It was actually only 6 pm (same as Pacific Daylight Savings Time).  This was great for us, since we could now drive back west for 45 minutes and arrive at the RV park before they closed at 7 pm.

Prior to all that excitement, we drove through mountain roads (not as bad as yesterday's) in New Mexico and Arizona.  I would have never guessed that this was in the Southwest, since it looks more like Montana.  We began the day at a car wash that had a couple stalls that were big enough to allow motorhomes to drive through.  We went through three cycles of manual wash with the motorhome to get it looking good again.  After driving all day through high country in the Southwest, it is again covered in dust (dirt) from the high winds everywhere that carries the dirt through the air, though not as bad as what we got in Silver City.  I thought pollen was bad.  Signs along the roads warn of dust storms and high winds.  Definitely makes you drive more slowly.  We had at least gale winds at the RV park as we arrived.

Tomorrow we plan to visit more slowly the Petrified Forest National Park (that includes the Painted Desert).  We shall also work in a visit to the Meteor Crater.  My right knee has been sore and stiff since our hike to the cliff dwellings.  I pray that it gets enough better that I can continue these adventures.
